Conquering addictions.

Many of our escapes are involuntary: addiction and dissociating from painful feelings are two examples. Anyone who has worked with a strong addiction—compulsive eating, compulsive sex, abuse of substances, explosive anger, or any other behavior that’s out of control—knows that when the urge comes on – it’s irresistible. The seduction is too strong. So the answer is to train again and again in less highly charged situations in which the urge is present but not so overwhelming. By training with everyday irritations, we develop the knack of refraining when the going gets tough.  Another effective way to re-train your brain to better resist urges is to apply mindfulness to one of your mundane daily routines.  For example, each time you are about to open a door (or answer a text or email), consciously pause for 3 seconds (taking 3 breaths) before you complete the action.  It takes patience and an understanding of how we’re hurting ourselves not to continue taking the same old escape route of speaking or acting out.  Be patient and kind with yourself while learning this new approach, and above all, don’t give up.

Making room for abundance

  • February 10, 2015

As we gather our inner strengths to meet the opportunities and challenges in 2015, let’s remember to EXHALE and Make Room for the next big breath.  Find a moment each day to stop what you are doing and focus on your breath.  Keeping your mouth closed and breathing only through your nose:
Start by emptying all the air out of your body by collapsing the chest and pulling your naval in, then slowly filling your abdomen with breath all the way up to your collar bones, then exhale.  Let’s call it: “balloon breath!”.  Repeat a few cycles. Smile at the end and notice the subtle changes that are already happening in your body.
A helpful internal question I’ve been using lately is “What is my motivation?”  And if my motivation is not about love, connection, joy, and following my bliss…I either let go of it on the spot, or I look to find a way to make it good.
To Find a way to make it good, here are some helpful “mantras” to ‘say’ to yourself:
“It’s working out, give it time.”
“What if it’s ok the way it is?”
“I am trusting that there is some wisdom in all this.”
“Thank you for this amazing life.”

Loving Kindness Meditation

  • February 3, 2015

Find a quiet place at home. Light a candle. Stretch a little. You can move through 3 rounds of Half Surya Namaskar – Half Stationary Sun Salute. (find on you tube).
Sit comfortably.
Set your intention to sit in gratitude and gather energy.
Then repeat in a gently audible voice or silently within:
May I have loving kindness
May I be safe from inner and out dangers
May I be well of body and mind
May I be happy and at ease

Think of your loved ones and repeat:
May they….
Think of a challenging person or situation and repeat:
Finally: May all beings and all creation and repeat…
It is a deeply peace instilling practice with huge boomerang effects. ♥
